The spot

York Cove is a sheltered inlet within George Town on the eastern shore of the Tamar River estuary, where the river meets Bass Strait in North East Tasmania. The cove's calm, protected waters make it an ideal entry point for exploring the rich underwater world of the lower Tamar. Below the surface lie diverse reef habitats, kelp forests, sponge gardens, and even a sunken tugboat wreck, drawing snorkelers and divers to sites like The Avon. The cove is part of a region renowned for its abundant marine life, with seals, penguins, and seabirds frequenting nearby waters.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Boat traffic

York Cove has a dual-lane concrete boat ramp and marina, so snorkelers must stay alert for vessel movements, especially in the main channel and launch area.

  • Moderate risk: Tidal current at river mouth

The Tamar River outflow meets Bass Strait, creating strong tidal movements near the cove's entrance. Snorkellers should time their swim with slack tide and avoid venturing beyond the sheltered cove during outgoing tides.

  • Low risk: Variable currents at river mouth

Where the Tamar River meets Bass Strait, tidal currents can shift rapidly, particularly near the channel and the confluence with open ocean.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperatures

Tasmanian waters are cool year-round; extended exposure can cause rapid heat loss and increase the risk of hypothermia without adequate wetsuit protection.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperature

Tasmanian waters are cold year-round (10-16°C). Even in summer a thick wetsuit (5mm+) is essential to prevent hypothermia during extended snorkelling sessions.

  • Low risk: Kelp entanglement

Giant kelp forests near the cove can entangle fins and limbs. Snorkellers should carry a cutting tool and avoid swimming through dense kelp beds in poor visibility.
