Yanchep Lagoon is a protected, crescent-shaped beach about 45 minutes north of Perth, sheltered by a 800m limestone reef that creates calm, crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling. The southern end features a closed-off lagoon section that is ideal for beginners and families, with white sand and rock pools to explore. Inside the lagoon, snorkelers drift over sandy patches and reef channels spotting schools of herring, while more experienced swimmers can venture outside the reef to deeper 7m channels. Patrolled by lifesavers in summer, with a kiosk nearby.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents over reef

A powerful rip current forms when incoming tide cascades over the reef, flowing away from shore through the surf zone. Year-round risk but strongest in summer when most visitors are present.

  • Moderate risk: Deep drop-off zones

Deep drop-offs to 3 m inside the lagoon and up to 7 m outside the reef; less confident swimmers should stay between the flags.

  • Moderate risk: Deep water beyond reef

Outside the reef, depths drop to 7m with stronger currents beyond the patrolled area.

  • Low risk: Shifting sand bars

Shifting sand bars can temporarily swallow protected swimming sections; check conditions on Beachsafe before visiting.

  • Low risk: Shark presence

Sharks are present in WA waters; occasional sightings may close the beach.

  • Low risk: Reduced visibility at low tide

At low tide, waves crash against the back of the reef churning up sediment and reducing visibility.

  • Low risk: Shifting sand bar at southern end

Shifting sand can temporarily close off the protected southern lagoon section throughout the year.

  • Low risk: Low tide turbidity

Low tide creates waves crashing against the back of the reef, churning up sediment and reducing visibility.
