Wurrumiyanga, the main community on Bathurst Island in the Tiwi Islands, sits along a stunning stretch of southeast coastline where turquoise Arafura Sea waters lap white-sand beaches fringed by tropical vegetation. This remote coastal area offers pristine snorkeling opportunities over sandy bottoms and patch reef near the shoreline, with the dramatic backdrop of Tiwi art centres and the white wooden church spire. The crystal-clear waters provide excellent visibility for spotting marine life, while the untouched beaches feel a world away from Darwin, just 80 km to the south. The area is deeply cultural — the Tiwi people call this 'Island of Smiles' — and snorkeling here combines spectacular natural beauty with one of Australia's most authentic Indigenous cultural experiences.
