Flat Rock is an exposed offshore reef pinnacle north of North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) in Moreton Bay, accessible only by boat from Brisbane or the Gold Coast. This rocky outcrop rises from the seabed to just beneath the surface, surrounded by deep gutters, bommies, and sandy patches that attract large pelagics, rays, and schooling reef fish. The site's famous "Shark Alley" is a deep channel where grey nurse sharks, wobbegongs, and bull rays are regularly encountered. Conditions are heavily weather-dependent with strong tidal currents, making this a wild, adventurous snorkel destination for experienced ocean swimmers only.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Strong ocean currents

Tidal flows around the rock pinnacle can be very strong, capable of sweeping snorkelers offshore. The site is subject to powerful tidal movement through Moreton Bay.

  • Moderate risk: Boat traffic

Accessible only by boat, this popular dive and fishing spot has vessels anchoring and maneuvering nearby.

  • Moderate risk: Exposed conditions

Fully exposed to wind and swell with no shelter. Deteriorating weather can make the site dangerous quickly.

  • Low risk: Marine life encounters

Shark Alley is known for grey nurse sharks, wobbegongs, and bull rays. While generally not aggressive, their presence can be startling.
