Nestled in the crystal-clear, temperate waters of Shearwater Bay on Woody Island — the only publicly accessible island in the Recherche Archipelago — the Woody Island Snorkel Trail offers a unique underwater discovery experience. Marked by a series of interpretive plaques (installed in 2000), the trail guides snorkelers across granite outcrops, through seagrass meadows, and past small underwater caves and swim-throughs. The bay's sheltered aspect and excellent visibility make it ideal for spotting colourful fish, blue starfish, vibrant corals, and — if you're lucky — the elusive leafy sea dragon. A sunken dinghy adds a touch of intrigue. Access is via the sandy beach or a swimming platform just offshore.
