The spot

Woodman Point, within Woodman Point Recreation Reserve in Coogee, offers one of Perth's most rewarding shore-entry snorkels. The highlight is a long limestone rock wall teeming with marine life, with depths ranging from 2–5 metres. Snorkel alongside the wall to explore tiny caves and swim-throughs, where schools of stripeys, old wives, and red-lipped morwongs gather. Scattered sand patches and seagrass beds harbour flatheads and, with a keen eye, seahorses. The nearby Coogee Maritime Trail — featuring the historic Omeo shipwreck just metres offshore and an artificial reef with 33 modules — adds another dimension to the area. Early morning light winds and neap tides offer the best visibility. Woodman Point is significantly quieter than Mettams Pool or the Omeo Wreck, providing plenty of space to explore.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Fishing lines

The area is a popular fishing spot. Look out for discarded or active fishing lines in the water, especially near the rock wall.

  • Low risk: Afternoon sea breeze chop

Westerly winds often pick up around midday, creating chop and reducing visibility. Best conditions are with easterly or light winds early in the day.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents

Tidal movements can create currents, particularly on larger tides. Snorkelling at the change of tide or on smaller tides reduces current risk.

  • Low risk: Rocky shore exit

The rock wall scramble exit can be awkward with snorkelling gear; use the beach entry/exit points instead.

  • Low risk: Fishing lines and hooks

This is a popular fishing spot; fishing lines and hooks are frequently encountered in the water near the rock wall.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Boat traffic operates in the area — a dive flag or surface marker buoy is recommended.

  • Low risk: Afternoon wind chop

Afternoon westerly winds can create chop and reduce visibility; easterly winds and swell under 1m are ideal.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents and visibility

Visibility is best in the morning; tide changes can also affect clarity and create mild currents.

  • Low risk: Shallow rock wall

The rock wall has uneven terrain with sharp rocks. Scrambling in and out can be awkward, especially with snorkel gear.

  • Low risk: Afternoon westerly winds

Westerly winds typically pick up around midday, creating chop and reduced visibility. Best conditions are early morning or on easterly wind days.
