Woodman Point is a sheltered headland in Coogee, marking the northern boundary of Cockburn Sound, 22 km south of Perth. Snorkel along a 200 m rocky wall that drops to 2–5 m depth, teeming with damsel fish, monocle bream, old wives, red-lipped morwongs, stripeys, flatheads, and western pomfred. Seahorses occasionally hide among the rocks. The sandy patches and weed beds between the wall and beach add variety. Easy beach entry and uncrowded conditions make this a favourite alternative to busier Perth metro spots. Morning snorkels with easterly winds and smaller tides deliver the best visibility.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Fishing lines

Woodman Point is a popular fishing spot; stray fishing lines and hooks in the water pose entanglement and injury risks, especially near the rock wall.

  • Moderate risk: Fishing lines and hooks

The rock wall area is a popular fishing spot — look out for stray fishing lines, hooks, and sinkers while snorkelling near the rocks.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

Tidal movement around the point can create moderate currents, particularly on an outgoing tide near the tip of the rock wall.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

The area has a boat ramp and is used by small vessels; stay vigilant near the channel and when swimming around the point.

  • Low risk: Afternoon westerly wind chop

Westerly winds pick up around midday, creating chop, waves, and reduced visibility. Best to snorkel early in the day.

  • Low risk: Tidal currents near rock wall

Tidal currents can develop around the point and rock wall, especially on larger tides. Snorkelling on a smaller tide or at tide change reduces current risk.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near boat ramp

Woodman Point has a boat ramp, so boat traffic may be present near the entry/exit points and the rock wall area.

  • Low risk: Afternoon westerly winds

Westerly winds often pick up around midday, creating waves and reduced visibility. Best snorkelling conditions are early morning or on easterly wind days.
