Winifred Beach is a secluded gem on Christmas Island's coastline, accessible only by 4WD at low tide via a rough rainforest track and a steep cliff staircase. This pristine, often deserted beach offers calm, clear waters perfect for snorkelling over healthy coral gardens, reef gullies, and fascinating rock pools. The rugged access means you'll likely have the beach to yourself, with spinner dolphins sometimes spotted offshore. It's a tranquil, intrepid spot for those seeking uncrowded snorkelling in an untouched marine environment.

Moderate risk: Tidal access road
The access track is only passable by 4WD at low tide. The rising tide can quickly cut off access to the beach and car park, stranding vehicles.
Low risk: Steep cliff staircase descent
A steep cliff-face staircase must be descended to reach the beach. The stairs can be slippery when wet and require caution.
Low risk: Rising tides and waves
Waves, rising tides and changing sea conditions near the water's edge can create dangerous conditions, especially for those exploring rock pools.

Getting in
Winifred Beach is accessible via a rough 4WD-only track that winds through rainforest. The drive should be timed with low tide. Upon reaching the car park, you must descend a steep cliff-face staircase to reach the beach.
A small unpaved car park is located at the end of the 4WD track near the top of the cliff staircase. Limited space — arrive early or at low tide to secure a spot and avoid getting stuck in the sand/ruts after the tide comes in. Check with the Christmas Island Visitor Centre for daily tide times and
