Tucked away in Broken Head Nature Reserve between Byron Bay and Lennox Head, Whites Beach is a secluded crescent of pristine white sand backed by lush subtropical rainforest. Access requires a steep 30-minute return hike through towering ferns and pandanus palms, rewarding you with volcanic rock formations, a sea cave, and crystal-clear shallows. At high tide a protected tidal lagoon forms between the rocks, offering a safe natural pool for snorkelers to explore the rocky reef edges where juvenile fish and colourful seaweed beds thrive.

Moderate risk: Rip currents
Like many exposed NSW beaches, Whites Beach can experience rip currents. Swim in the protected tidal lagoon between rock formations rather than in the open surf.
Low risk: Steep trail descent
The walking track to the beach is steep and uneven, requiring care particularly in wet conditions. Not suitable for those with mobility issues.
Low risk: Isolated location
Limited mobile reception and no lifeguard patrol. Bring water, sun protection, and let someone know your plans.
Low risk: Rocky shore entry
Entry to the water involves traversing beach pebbles and scattered volcanic rocks. Water shoes are strongly recommended.

Getting in
From Byron Bay, head south on Broken Head Road and turn onto Seven Mile Beach Road (unsealed). Follow the dirt road through rainforest for about 2 km — look for a small parking area and the Whites Beach walking track sign on the right. The track descends steeply through Broken Head Nature Reserve; allow 15-20 minutes each way.
Small unsealed carpark off Seven Mile Beach Road. No marked spaces; arrive early in peak season as space is limited.
Free. No entry fees for Broken Head Nature Reserve.
