Trannies Beach (also known as West Island northern beach) is a sheltered, calm-water snorkeling spot at the northern tip of West Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. This pristine white-sand beach offers easy shore entry into crystal-clear lagoon waters protected within the Cocos Islands Marine Park. The healthy coral gardens start just metres from shore, making it ideal for families and beginner snorkellers. With warm water year-round (25–30°C), excellent visibility, and very few crowds, you can float among colourful parrotfish, butterflyfish, and the occasional green turtle or blacktip reef shark in one of Australia's most remote and unspoiled tropical settings.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Low risk: Sharp coral rubble at entry

Reef rocks and coral ruble along the shore entry point. Reef shoes are recommended.

  • Low risk: Shallow water at low tide

Low to mid tide is best for accessing the reef flats. At very low tide the water can be shallow, requiring care to avoid touching coral.
