West Island is the largest island in the Sir Edward Pellew Group, a remote archipelago in the Gulf of Carpentaria off the Northern Territory coast. Its fringing beaches are wild, sweeping sand strips backed by dry tropical woodland, with crystal-clear shallow waters offering excellent snorkeling over sandy flats and patchy seagrass beds. The island is a globally significant nesting site for four species of marine turtles — flatback, green, loggerhead, and hawksbill — which come ashore between October and March. The beaches are pristine and utterly undeveloped, with no infrastructure, making for a true wilderness snorkeling experience. The waters are rich with tropical fish, rays, and the occasional dugong, though saltwater crocodiles are present throughout the Gulf and visitors must exercise extreme caution. The 10-metre tidal range creates strong currents, so snorkeling is best at slack tide near the high stand.
