Just 3 km from Esperance town centre, West Beach is a stunning crescent of white sand framed by the rugged headlands of Dempster Head to the east and Chapman's Point to the west. At low tide, the nearshore reef creates protected shallow lagoons ideal for snorkelling, revealing the weathered schist formations with their glistening bands of mica and tiny pink garnets. Beyond the lagoons, the reef attracts diverse marine life, while the outer breaks offer popular surf conditions. A formed path and wooden staircases provide easy access to the sand, and the lookout above is a prime spot for whale watching during winter.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents

Flash rips form between reef gaps, especially during tidal changes. Strong currents can pull swimmers away from shore rapidly.

  • Moderate risk: Flash rips between reef gaps

Tidal movement through gaps in the two large reefs can create sudden, strong rip currents that pull swimmers away from shore. These are most pronounced during mid-tide when water is flowing strongly between the reef and open ocean.

  • Moderate risk: Waves washing over reefs

In certain swell conditions, waves can break over the top of the reefs, making the lagoon pools unsafe and creating unpredictable surges.

  • Low risk: Waves over reef

In certain conditions, waves may wash over the reef, making the lagoon pools potentially unsafe for snorkellers.

  • Low risk: Strong tidal currents

Currents can become strong around reef edges as tides move in and out, particularly at mid-tide.

  • Low risk: Sharp rocks

The granite reef and surrounding rock formations can be sharp, especially when navigating in and out of the lagoons. Reef shoes are strongly recommended.

  • Low risk: Strong currents

Outside the reef-protected lagoons, currents can be strong, particularly during larger tidal swings. Stick to the lagoon areas unless you are an experienced open-water swimmer.
