The spot

Werri Beach is a sweeping south-east facing beach in Gerringong, famous for surf but with excellent snorkelling conditions on its calm days. The southern end features Ourie Pool, a natural ocean rock pool carved into a flat rock shelf, plus a small circular kiddie pool — both teeming with micro-marine life at low tide. Beyond the pool, the extensive rock platform reveals countless tidepools filled with starfish, small crabs, and colourful seaweed. The beach is patrolled in summer and backed by Werri Lagoon (calm for novices), making this a versatile, family-friendly snorkel spot on the NSW South Coast.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Surf and swell conditions

Werri Beach is exposed to ocean swells and can experience strong surf, especially on the main beach. Snorkel only when conditions are calm.

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents

Rip currents can form along the beach, particularly near the southern headland. Swim between the red and yellow flags when lifeguards are on patrol.

  • Moderate risk: Surf break and shore dump

Werri Beach can have powerful waves and shore dumps, particularly on a south-easterly swell. Snorkellers should enter via the rock pool or in calm conditions only.

  • Moderate risk: Outgoing tide current at lagoon entrance

The Werri Lagoon outlet at the northern end of the beach can create rips and outgoing currents after rain or on a falling tide.

  • Low risk: Rocky reef at southern end

The southern reef platform has sharp rocks and uneven surfaces. Wear reef shoes and exercise caution when entering and exiting the water.

  • Low risk: Slippery rock platform

The rock shelf around Ourie Pool and the southern end is very slippery, especially when wet, with sharp oyster shells.

  • Low risk: No lifeguards at rock pool

Ourie Pool is unpatrolled; the main beach has lifeguards in summer only (Dec–Feb).
