Wedge Island (snorkeling/diving area) lies within the stunning Jurien Bay Marine Park on Western Australia's turquoise Coral Coast. The island itself is a nature reserve accessible by boat, while the surrounding waters feature extensive limestone inner reef close to shore, clear shallow lagoons, and seagrass meadows dotted with caves, grottos, and overhangs covered in colourful sponges and anemones. For shore-based snorkeling, the Wanagarren Nature Reserve coastline between Grey and Wedge Island offers pristine sites accessible via high-clearance 4WD. The waters are home to warm-water fish species and the area is renowned for its underwater topography.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Swell and surge exposure

Exposed to ocean swell — snorkeling conditions vary greatly depending on wind and swell direction. Rocky outcrops at northern and southern ends may have reef suitable only in calm conditions.

  • Moderate risk: 4WD track conditions

Access tracks in Wanagarren Nature Reserve require high-clearance 4WD with narrow, sandy sections, blind corners, and potential soft sand.

  • Moderate risk: High clearance 4WD access required

The Wanagarren Nature Reserve coastal track between Grey and Wedge Island requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. Standard 2WD vehicles cannot access these shore-based sites.

  • Moderate risk: Remote location - limited services

These are remote, undeveloped beach access points with no lifeguards, minimal mobile reception, and no amenities nearby. Snorkelers must be self-sufficient.

  • Moderate risk: Ocean swell

The exposed beach receives significant ocean swell, making snorkeling conditions vary greatly day-to-day. Only safe in calm conditions.

  • Moderate risk: Strong currents

Rip currents and longshore drift can develop along the wide open beach, especially on the rising tide.

  • Moderate risk: Strong ocean currents

The exposed coastline can experience strong sweep currents, especially during larger swell events. Exercise caution when snorkeling near rock ledges.

  • Low risk: Marine stinger season (Nov-Apr)

Box jellyfish and other marine stingers may be present in warmer months along the Coral Coast.

  • Low risk: Kangaroo ticks

Vegetated areas around access tracks may harbour kangaroo ticks — check yourself after traversing bushland.

  • Low risk: Strong coastal currents and swell

Exposed beach sites along the open coast can experience strong currents and ocean swell, particularly on days with prevailing onshore winds or during larger swell events.

  • Low risk: Remote location

Limited phone reception and no on-site emergency services. Snorkelers must be self-sufficient and carry communication devices.

  • Low risk: Rocky outcrops

Sharp limestone reef at the northern and southern ends of the beach. Reef shoes are essential to avoid cuts.

  • Low risk: Limited access and isolation

Wedge Island is a remote location with limited mobile reception and no on-site emergency services. Snorkel with a buddy and carry adequate supplies.

  • Low risk: Marine stingers

Box jellyfish and other marine stingers may be present during warmer months. Wear a stinger suit for protection.

  • Low risk: Sharp limestone and reef

Shallow limestone reef ledges and bommies can be sharp. Reef shoes are recommended to protect feet when entering and exiting the water.
