Wave Break Island is a man-made island constructed in 1985 in the sheltered Gold Coast Broadwater, just off Southport. Built originally to protect the western foreshore from waves and erosion, it now offers some of the calmest, clearest snorkelling on the Gold Coast. The northern rock wall teems with up to 50 species of subtropical fish, and the shallow, protected waters (0–15 m depth) make it ideal for families and beginners. Access is primarily by a short 10-minute boat ride from Mariner Cove Marina, with guided tours offering fish-feeding experiences amid rainbow-coloured damsels, rays, and the occasional dolphin or turtle.

Moderate risk: Full-face mask prohibition
Many tour operators prohibit full-face snorkel masks due to CO₂ rebreathing risk. Use a standard mask and snorkel instead.
Low risk: Boat traffic
The island is accessed by boat and sits within the Broadwater, a busy waterway with recreational and tour vessels. Snorkelers should stay within marked areas and be aware of boat movements.
Low risk: Marine stingers
Box jellyfish and other marine stingers may be present in Gold Coast waters, particularly during the warmer months (November to May). Stinger suits are recommended.
Low risk: Strong tidal currents
Tidal flows through the Broadwater can create currents around the island's rock walls, particularly during outgoing tides.
Low risk: Shallow reef sharp edges
The rocky northern wall and shallow reefs have sharp edges; snorkelers should wear protective footwear and avoid touching the rocks.
