Tucked inside Sydney's Royal National Park, Wattamolla Beach is a one-of-a-kind snorkeling destination where a shallow freshwater lagoon meets the ocean, separated from the surf by a wide sandy bar. The lagoon's calm, crystal-clear waters are protected from swell — perfect for floating and snorkeling. A small creek-fed waterfall spills over sandstone cliffs into the lagoon, adding to the idyllic setting. Cabbage tree palms fringe the picnic area, and the white-sand beach opens onto dramatic coastal views. It's a family favourite for good reason: safe paddling for kids, excellent visibility, and easy access from the car park just 400 m away.

Moderate risk: Limited summer patrol
The beach is only patrolled by lifeguards during the summer months (Dec-Feb). Outside this time, no supervision is available.
Moderate risk: Rip currents at ocean beach
The beach section can have strong rips, especially when swell is up. Swim only between the red and yellow flags when patrolled.
Low risk: Ocean swell breakthrough
During high tide or large southerly swells, waves can wash over the sandbar into the lagoon, creating sudden surges and strong currents near the mouth.
Low risk: Slippery rocks at waterfall
Rocks around the small waterfall and lagoon edge can be very slippery, posing a tripping or falling hazard.
Low risk: Crowded on weekends
Wattamolla is extremely popular on fine weekends, leading to car park closures and congested swimming areas.
Low risk: Car park congestion
The Wattamolla car park fills very quickly on weekends and public holidays, often by mid-morning, leading to road closures.
Low risk: Slippery rock platforms
Rock platforms on either side of the beach can be slippery and hazardous when wet.
Low risk: Park closure during bushfire danger
Royal National Park may close on days of extreme or catastrophic fire danger, or during heavy rain events.
