Watsons Bay is a sheltered, crescent-shaped sandy bay on the western side of Lizard Island, part of Australia's remote northern Great Barrier Reef. Surrounded by granite outcrops and fringed by coral gardens, this stunning bay offers shore-entry snorkelling directly onto the reef. The calm, turquoise waters — protected from the prevailing south-easterly trade winds — make it a prime spot for drifting over colourful coral bommies, clam gardens, and abundant marine life. Lizard Island is one of the few places where you can step off the beach into a world-class reef experience, with easy access to the famous Cod Hole dive site nearby.

Moderate risk: Box jellyfish / marine stingers
Marine stingers (box jellyfish) are present in tropical Queensland waters during the warmer months.
Low risk: Tidal influences on reef access
Best snorkelling conditions occur at high tide when water depth over the reef is sufficient. Low tide exposes shallow coral heads.
Low risk: Trade wind swell
The region experiences strong south-easterly trade winds from April to September, which can create choppy conditions and reduce visibility.
