Bird Rock is a striking series of jagged sandstone and shale bluffs, sea stacks, and reefs that extend 1 km seaward from the shore at Walkerville South on Waratah Bay. This South Gippsland gem offers sensational snorkeling around the rocky headlands, where crystal-clear waters, tide pools, and semi-secluded beaches meet. The protected half-moon bay at Walkerville South provides gentle waves ideal for beginners, while the reefs around Bird Rock reward more confident snorkelers with a labyrinth of gutters, caves, and ledges to explore.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Ocean swell and surf

Waratah Bay is exposed to Southern Ocean swells, creating variable surf conditions and strong wave action around the exposed reefs.

  • Moderate risk: Rip currents

Rip currents can develop near the rocky headlands and reefs, particularly during larger swell periods.

  • Moderate risk: Strong ocean currents

Tidal flows around the rocky headland and between stacks can become strong, particularly on an outgoing tide.

  • Low risk: Sharp sandstone reefs

Jagged sandstone and shale bluffs and reefs can cause cuts and scrapes when entering or exiting the water.

  • Low risk: Bird Rock Reef Hazards

Bird Rock extends 1 km seaward with jagged sandstone, shale bluffs, and shallow reefs — hazardous in swell conditions.

  • Low risk: Swell and Surf

Exposed to Bass Strait swells; conditions can change quickly with increasing wind and wave height.

  • Low risk: Sharp sandstone and shale terrain

The reef and rock platforms have jagged edges that can cause cuts and scrapes. Wear booties or reef shoes.

  • Low risk: Variable swell and surge

While often sheltered, swell can wrap around the headland, creating surge conditions between the sea stacks.
