The Vernon Islands (Potinga Islands) are a small, remote island group in Clarence Strait between Darwin and the Tiwi Islands, renowned for their crystal-clear seawater and extraordinary 'Blue Holes' — deep, ancient sinkholes that puncture the surrounding reef flats. These limestone-formed pools, accessible only by boat, harbour tall vase corals, staghorn corals, and schools of colourful fish. The reef flats themselves teem with blue-ringed octopuses, mantis shrimps, abalone, and an array of hardy corals. The water clarity rivals that of the Great Barrier Reef, making this a premier snorkel destination for adventurers seeking pristine, uncrowded marine habitat.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Blue-ringed octopus

The Northern Greater Blue-ringed Octopus (Hapalochlaena sp.) is commonly found on the reef flats. Its venom can cause paralysis and respiratory failure.

  • Moderate risk: Strong tidal currents

Very large tidal movements (up to 8 m) create strong, fast-moving currents over the reef flats, especially around the Blue Holes. Snorkelers must time their swim with slack tide.

  • Moderate risk: Remote location

Remote location with no facilities; emergency evacuation is via boat only, with limited mobile reception.

  • Low risk: Sharp coral rubble and heat exposure

Exposed reef flats become dangerously hot under the tropical sun at low tide, with sharp coral rubble that can cause cuts and burns.
