Upper Gulf St Vincent Marine Park protects vast, shallow seagrass meadows and expansive intertidal mudflats along the eastern shores of the Yorke Peninsula. The warm, nutrient-rich waters support dense beds of Neptune's seagrass, home to protected pipefish, blue swimmer crabs, rays and juvenile garfish. The intertidal zone reveals razorfish beds, mangrove-lined creeks and saltmarsh habitat — a unique snorkeling environment where you can drift above lush underwater pastures at high tide, observing the intricate marine life that relies on this critical estuarine ecosystem.

Moderate risk: Shifting tides
The upper gulf has a significant tidal range. Incoming and outgoing tides create currents that can carry snorkelers across the shallow flats away from entry points.
Low risk: Soft muddy substrate
Intertidal mudflats can be very soft and slippery, making entry and exit difficult at low tide. Snorkeling is best at high tide over the seagrass beds.
Low risk: Boat traffic
Some areas of the marine park are accessible by boat and vessel traffic may be present near channels. Snorkelers should stay aware of their surroundings.
