Located just 10 minutes east of the Low Head lighthouse off the Tamar River mouth, Two Mile Reef is a semi-submerged anomaly of bull kelp and rubble reef that barely breaks the surface at high tide. This small, exposed reef is a renowned spring and early-summer hotspot for southern calamari, attracting experienced boat-based snorkelers and divers who brave the brisk Tasmanian temperate waters for close encounters with squid, cuttlefish, and the vibrant kelp forest ecosystem. The reef's isolation and strong tidal flows keep it pristine, offering a true wild snorkel experience on the edge of Bass Strait.

High risk: Outgoing Tide Current
Strong tidal flows off the Tamar River mouth create powerful currents, especially on an outgoing tide. Snorkelers must time their visit carefully or risk being swept away from the reef.
Moderate risk: Semi-submerged Reef at High Tide
The reef sits just below the surface at high tide, creating a navigation hazard for boats and making it difficult to rest or stand. At low tide it may be partially exposed but still hazardous.
Moderate risk: Cold Water Temperature
Tasmanian temperate waters are cold year-round; 7mm wetsuit or drysuit essential. Hypothermia risk without adequate thermal protection.
Moderate risk: Boat Traffic
The reef is a popular fishing and squid-jigging spot accessed by boat. Snorkelers must be vigilant for boat traffic and consider using a dive flag.
Low risk: Bull Kelp Entanglement
Dense bull kelp covering the reef can snag fins or gear. Snorkelers should carry a dive knife and remain aware of their surroundings.
