Nestled within Arakoon National Park on the mid North Coast of NSW, Trial Bay offers a calm, sheltered beach protected by a purpose-built break wall — making it one of the few east-coast spots where you can watch the sunset over the water. The gentle, crystal-clear waters of Front Beach create an ideal environment for family-friendly snorkeling, with sandy shallows that gradually deepen. The historic Trial Bay Gaol ruins tower on the headland behind, adding a dramatic backdrop, while a nearby kiosk provides refreshments. The bay is also part of the traditional lands of the Dunghutti people, rich in cultural significance.

Low risk: Tannin-stained water after heavy rain
Following heavy rain, runoff from the nearby Macleay River can turn the water dark with tannin and mud, reducing visibility significantly for snorkeling.
Low risk: Stinger jellyfish
Bluebottle and other stinger jellyfish can occasionally drift into the bay during warmer months, particularly from December to March.
