Town Beach sits on the western bank of the Tamar River mouth where the crystal-clear waters merge with Bass Strait, just a short stroll from George Town's historic centre. This sheltered, sandy beach offers calm swimming conditions and views across to Low Head and the Bass Strait beyond. The gentle gradient and shallow waters make it an ideal spot for a relaxed snorkel, with the surrounding area rich in maritime history dating back to Australia's third-oldest European settlement. The beach is part of a network of George Town's coastal parks and provides easy access to the river estuary.

Low risk: Strong outgoing tide current
The Tamar River mouth can produce strong tidal flows, especially on outgoing tides, which may pull swimmers toward Bass Strait.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Bass Strait waters are cool year-round, with winter temperatures dropping significantly, increasing risk of hypothermia during extended exposure.
Low risk: Seasonal wind chop
Afternoon north-easterly winds can create choppy surface conditions, reducing visibility and making swimming more tiring.
