Tucked between two break walls at the mouth of the Brunswick River, Torakina Beach is a human-made sandy haven that is almost always crystal-clear and swell-free. Sheltered from the open ocean, this calm pocket of water is ideal for families, beginner snorkelers, and anyone wanting a gentle paddle among the fish. The grassy Torakina Park behind the beach offers picnic tables, barbecues, and shady trees, while a short walk across the bridge connects you to Brunswick Heads' award-winning cafés. At high tide the river becomes a clear, slow-moving snorkeling channel teeming with small fish, making it a serene alternative to the surf beaches nearby.

Low risk: Outgoing tide current
When the tide drops, water funnels out of the river mouth, creating a noticeable current that can sweep inexperienced swimmers toward the open ocean.
Low risk: No lifeguard patrol
Torakina Beach is not patrolled by lifeguards, so swimmers enter at their own risk.
Low risk: Boat traffic near river mouth
The beach sits at the Brunswick River mouth where boats access the river, so swimmers should stay within the designated swimming area.
Low risk: Tidal current at river mouth
Moderate current flows where the Brunswick River meets the sea, especially during outgoing tide. Snorkellers should stay inside the sheltered beach area.
Low risk: Boats and jet skis
The Brunswick River entrance is used by boats and jet skis, particularly near the break walls. Be aware of watercraft traffic when snorkelling near the channel.
Low risk: Bluebottle stings
Bluebottle (Portuguese man o' war) can appear on North Coast beaches during northerly winds and warmer months.
