The beachfront in front of the shacks and Tomahawk Caravan Park offers sheltered access to a shallow reef system that is rewarding for snorkellers of all levels. At low tide, "The Corner" reveals a reef platform barely covered by water, with edges dropping to over 2 metres — perfect for exploring ledges, gutters, and tidal pools. Behind the small island, a diverse marine community of fish, crustaceans, seaweeds and sponges thrives in the clear Bass Strait waters. A natural tidal pool near the beach provides a safe, knee-to-thigh-depth introduction for children, teeming with hermit crabs, juvenile fish, and molluscs.

Moderate risk: Cold water temperatures
Tasmanian temperate waters are cold year-round; even in summer water temperatures rarely exceed 18°C. Exposure can lead to rapid fatigue and hypothermia without appropriate wetsuit gear.
Moderate risk: Rip currents
Strong rip currents can develop along the open beach, especially during southerly winds and larger swell conditions.
Moderate risk: Swell and surf conditions
Exposed to Bass Strait swells which can produce shore dump and powerful waves, particularly in winter months.
Moderate risk: Unpatrolled Beach
Tomahawk Beach is an unpatrolled beach with no lifeguard services. Snorkellers must be water-safe and supervise children at all times.
Low risk: Outgoing tide current at river mouth
The Tomahawk River mouth at the eastern end of the beach can produce strong outgoing currents, especially after heavy rain. Stick to the main beach area away from the estuary.
Low risk: Shallow sand spit and lagoon formation
A low sand spit and elongated lagoon can form along the beach near the river mouth, creating variable depths and shifting sandbars that may disorient swimmers and snorkelers.
Low risk: Variable weather and wind chop
Bass Strait weather can change quickly, bringing sudden wind chop that reduces visibility and creates challenging conditions for swimmers and snorkelers.
Low risk: Remote location
Limited mobile reception and few facilities nearby; self-sufficient travel and awareness of tide times essential.
Low risk: 4WD access track requirement
Vehicle access to the beach is via a 4WD track off Cape Portland Road; soft sand and tidal changes can trap vehicles.
Low risk: Low Tide Shallow Reef
At low tide 'The Corner' reef is extremely shallow, with the top barely covered. Care is needed to avoid contact with sharp rock, barnacles, or sea urchins.
Low risk: Tidal Currents Around Island
Slight tidal currents may develop around the island and at reef edges where water depth drops to over 2 metres.
