The V-Wall is a renowned snorkel and dive site on the southern edge of Coral Bay, within the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef. This underwater gutters-and-bommies formation drops from shallow reef flat into deeper channels, attracting swirling schools of batfish, trevally, and sweetlips alongside green turtles and reef sharks. The site is named for the V-shaped wall of coral that funnels marine life past snorkelers drifting with the gentle current. Part of the greater Coral Bay lagoon system, the wall offers clear, warm waters and exceptional coral coverage.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Irukandji jellyfish

Stinger season on the Ningaloo coast; small box jellyfish may be present, especially in warmer months (Nov–May).

  • Moderate risk: Marine stingers

Box jellyfish and other marine stingers may be present in warmer months (November to April). Wear a stinger suit for protection.

  • Low risk: Moderate current at the wall

A gentle to moderate drift current funnels through the V-shaped gutter, requiring average fitness and competent snorkelling ability.

  • Low risk: Sharp coral bommies

Shallow coral bommies adjacent to the wall can cause cuts and scrapes; avoid standing on coral.

  • Low risk: Marine stingers (general)

General stinger risk typical of tropical WA waters; wear a stinger suit during warmer months (Oct–May).

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near channel entrance

The wall lies near the channel used by tour and fishing boats; be aware of vessel movements at the surface.

  • Low risk: Strong current at reef passage ('Keyhole')

If venturing out through the Keyhole passage to the outer reef edge, currents can be strong. Stick to the protected lagoon for a beginner-friendly experience.

  • Low risk: Corrugated access roads

The road to Gnaraloo Station / 3 Mile Camp area is corrugated and may require 4WD. The main Coral Bay township lagoon area is 2WD accessible.

  • Low risk: Sun exposure

Limited shade on the beach with intense Australian sun year-round. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and stay hydrated.
