Tucked away on the eastern shore of Flinders Island, The Slipway offers calm, protected waters perfect for a relaxed snorkel. This shallow, sandy-bottomed launch area shelves gently into the clear Bass Strait waters, making it an ideal entry point for swimmers and novice snorkelers. The surrounding granite boulders and seagrass beds attract small reef fish, and on calm days visibility is excellent. It's a quiet, low-key alternative to the island's more exposed beaches, with easy shore access right off the boat ramp.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Cold water temperatures

Bass Strait waters are cold year-round (10–18°C), posing a risk of rapid heat loss without a wetsuit.

  • Low risk: Changing Tides & Currents

Tidal flows through the gulch entrance can create moderate currents, especially during incoming/outgoing tides. Best snorkeled at slack tide.

  • Low risk: Wind Chop & Swell

The cove is sheltered but swell from the Bass Strait can wrap around the headland on windy days, reducing visibility and creating surge near rocks.

  • Low risk: Shallow Rocky Reef

Submerged boulders and reef shelves sit close to the surface in places. Snorkelers should fin carefully to avoid bumps and scrapes.

  • Low risk: Boat Traffic

The Gulch is used as a safe anchorage for recreational boats. Be alert for mooring lines, dinghies, and vessels entering or leaving.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic at ramp

The slipway is an active boat-launching area; watch for trailered boats and vessel movements near the shore entry point.

  • Low risk: Variable tidal currents

Tidal flow through the eastern channels can create moderate currents around the slipway, especially during spring tides.
