The Rose Garden is a delightful temperate-water snorkeling site on Tasmania's rugged east coast, near the Freycinet Peninsula. Named for the colourful sponge gardens and vibrant invertebrate life that carpet the rocky reef — patches of pink, red, orange and purple growth that resemble a floral garden — the site offers clear, sheltered conditions in calm weather. Snorkelers drift over granite boulders and gutters while exploring one of Tasmania's prettiest nearshore reefs, with excellent visibility during the summer months.

Moderate risk: Swell surge
The exposed east coast can receive ocean swells that create surge over the reef, making conditions challenging.
Low risk: Variable visibility
Tasmanian east coast visibility is highly weather-dependent; post-storm runoff can reduce it to under 3 m.
Low risk: Cool water temperatures
Year-round water temperatures range 10–18 °C, requiring a wetsuit; risk of cold shock for unprepared swimmers.
Low risk: Wind chop
Nor-easterly winds can quickly create choppy surface conditions, making shore exits more difficult.
