The Monument is a beloved shore-entry snorkel and dive site at the end of George Town's main street on the Tamar River estuary in North East Tasmania. The sheltered, shallow waters here offer a fascinating temperate underwater landscape with seagrass beds and rocky reef structure. As one of the most accessible snorkel spots in the region, it provides calm conditions ideal for observing the marine life of the Wild Tamar. The nearby pontoon, park benches, and morning sun make it as pleasant topside as it is below.

Low risk: Boat traffic in Tamar River
The site is located in the kanamaluka / Tamar River estuary where recreational and commercial vessel traffic can pass near the shore. Snorkelers should stay within the designated swimming area and remain vigilant.
Low risk: Variable visibility
Tamar River runoff and tidal movement can reduce underwater visibility, particularly after heavy rainfall or during strong outgoing tides.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Tasmanian waters are temperate year-round. Water temperatures can drop below 12°C (54°F) in winter. A wetsuit (5mm or thicker) is strongly recommended.
