A natural rock reef ledge shelters this tidal lagoon from the Southern Ocean, creating a calm, crystal-clear pool teeming with reef fish. Accessible from the Golden Island carpark via a boardwalk and a 200-metre beach walk around the point at low tide, the lagoon offers a protected snorkel haven with brilliant visibility. Keep an eye out for blue gropers (green as juveniles, brilliant blue as adults), along with colourful reef fish in the shallow, sun-warmed waters. Note that the lagoon is not accessible in winter due to rough conditions.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Shark presence

Great white and bronze whaler sharks have been spotted in the area near Golden Island, working together to round up salmon schools.

  • Moderate risk: Tide-dependent access

The lagoon is only reachable at low tide — high tide or winter swells can make the reef ledge impassable. Not accessible in winter.

  • Low risk: Ocean swell surge

Southern Ocean swells can break over the reef ledge, creating surge and strong currents near the entry point in marginal conditions.
