The Hangover is a thrilling wall dive site located just off Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays, part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. This site features dramatic underwater terrain with a steep wall drop-off, coral-lined ledges, and swim-through channels that create an exhilarating snorkel and dive experience. The wall is draped in colourful soft corals, gorgonians, and sea fans, attracting pelagic predators like giant trevally, barramundi cod, and mackerel that patrol the drop-off. The mix of shallow reef flats and deep wall sections makes it a dynamic spot for adventurous snorkellers visiting the Whitsundays.

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong currents along the wall

The Hangover is a wall dive site where the bottom drops away rapidly. Strong currents can sweep along the wall, requiring good fitness and buoyancy control.

  • Moderate risk: Currents and wall drop-off

The Hangover is a wall dive with deeper drop-offs and a shelf that can expose snorkellers to moderate to strong currents. Drift conditions can develop quickly.

  • Moderate risk: Wall drop-off & depth changes

The site is a wall dive with a steep drop-off. Snorkellers should be aware of depth changes and strong currents near the edge of the wall.

  • Moderate risk: Tidal currents

Tidal currents can be strong around the wall, particularly during outgoing tides, and may sweep snorkellers away from the reef structure.

  • Low risk: Outgoing tide current

Located in the outer passage, the site can be affected by tidal flows that create challenging conditions during peak ebb or flood tides.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Boat traffic from Airlie Beach tour operators and private vessels in the Whitsundays shipping channel.

  • Low risk: Boat access only

The site is accessed by boat only. Snorkellers must be comfortable with boat-based entry and exit in open water, sometimes with chop.
