Nestled within the renowned Bay of Fires Conservation Area on Tasmania's north-east coast, The Gardens is a serene coastal pocket of pristine white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and dramatic granite boulders splashed with vibrant orange lichen. Named by Lady Jane Franklin for its profusion of wildflowers, this secluded spot offers sheltered rocky inlets and shallow sandy bays perfect for temperate-water snorkeling. The clear, calm waters reveal a fascinating underwater landscape of boulder gardens and kelp beds, with encounters possible with dolphins and migrating whales passing offshore during season. The beaches are uncrowded, making it a peaceful escape for those seeking wild, unspoiled snorkeling terrain.

Moderate risk: Rip currents
Occasional rip currents can develop at the more exposed sandy stretches like Taylors Beach and Swimcart Beach.
Low risk: Swell and surf conditions
Exposed beaches can experience strong swell and dumpy surf, particularly during southerly winds. Check conditions before entering.
Low risk: Slippery granite rocks
The iconic orange-lichen-covered granite boulders become extremely slippery when wet. Use caution when rock-hopping between inlets.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Tasmania's temperate waters are cold year-round (11-17°C). Wetsuit recommended even in summer to avoid hypothermia risk.
Low risk: Swell surges
Swells can increase suddenly with changing weather, creating stronger wave action in otherwise sheltered coves.
Low risk: Slippery rocks
Granite boulders and rocky inlets adjoining sandy beaches can be slippery when wet.
Low risk: Cold water temperature
Southern Ocean waters remain cold year-round; extended exposure risks hypothermia without proper wetsuit gear.
