The spot

Community-maintained

Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

The Dock is a sheltered, white-sand bay cradled by granite headlands on the northern side of Mt Killiecrankie, Flinders Island. Accessed via a rough 4WD track through coastal scrub, this remote spot offers crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling among giant granite boulders and rocky reefs. The surrounding cliffs of Mt Killiecrankie — rising 160 m — shelter the cove from prevailing winds, creating calm conditions for paddling and exploring the pristine shoreline. The area is also famous for its "Killiecrankie Diamonds" (topaz crystals) washed down from pegmatite seams in the granite.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Remote location

Flinders Island is remote with limited services; no mobile reception, shops or facilities nearby. Bring all supplies and inform others of your plans.

  • Low risk: 4WD track deterioration

The access track descends steeply and has deteriorated; parking is recommended 1 km away at the Mt Killiecrankie walking track with a walk in required.

  • Low risk: Rough coastal walking track

The unmarked coastal trail to Stackys Bight or Killiecrankie involves uneven granite terrain and can be hazardous in wet conditions.

  • Low risk: Cold Water Temperature

Temperate waters year-round; even in summer water temps rarely exceed 18°C. Wetsuit recommended.

  • Low risk: Wind Swell Fluctuations

Although sheltered, northerly winds can create choppy conditions reducing visibility.
