The Crags is a wild and dramatic stretch of Victoria's Discovery Coast, featuring jagged cliffs, rocky outcrops, and extensive reef platforms sculpted by centuries of Southern Ocean swell. Located 12 km west of Port Fairy near Yambuk, this exposed shoreline offers shore-entry snorkelling over shallow inner reefs and tidal pools rich with fish life, invertebrates, and caves. The views take in Deen Maar (Lady Julia Percy Island) 19 km offshore. Snorkelling is rewarding but highly weather-dependent due to the exposed, rugged conditions.

  • High risk: Permanent rip currents

Permanent rip currents run out through gaps in the reefs on the more open beaches.

  • Moderate risk: Irregular reef with deep holes

The reefs are irregular with deep holes and sudden drop-offs that can surprise swimmers and snorkellers.

  • Moderate risk: Exposed southern swell and weather-dependent access

Exposed to Southern Ocean swell with rapidly changing conditions; only safe to enter during very calm weather windows.

  • Low risk: Remote location with no facilities

No formal facilities, toilets, or emergency services at the site; limited mobile reception.
