The Cathedral is a celebrated snorkeling and dive site on the fringing reef of Hook Island in the Whitsundays, part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Named for its cavern-like coral overhangs and swim-through channels that create a cathedral-like atmosphere, this site offers shallow, sheltered snorkeling amongst vibrant coral gardens, plate corals, and bommies. The calm, protected waters make it ideal for exploring the intricate nooks and crannies of the reef, where brilliant reef fish dart through crevices. Access is exclusively by tour boat, with operators from Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour running day trips that combine The Cathedral with nearby sites like Blue Pearl Bay.

Moderate risk: Marine stingers (box jellyfish)
Box jellyfish and Irukandji may be present in Whitsundays waters during the warmer months. Wear a stinger suit provided by tour operators.
Low risk: Strong tidal currents
Tidal flow through the Whitsunday Passage can create currents around reef edges. Snorkel within marked safe zones directed by crew.
Low risk: Sharp coral
Shallow coral bommies and overhangs can cause cuts and abrasions. Avoid touching coral and maintain buoyancy control.
Low risk: Sun exposure
Tropical sun is intense year-round. Use reef-safe sunscreen, wear a rash vest, and stay hydrated.
