The Cathedral (aka Cathedral Reef) is a renowned boat-access dive and snorkel site on the Mornington Peninsula in southern Port Phillip Bay. This submerged reef system features dramatic rock formations, swim-throughs, and ledges that rise from sandy seabed — cathedral-like structures that give the site its name. Cool, temperate waters support rich marine growth including kelp forests, sponges, and sea tulips. It's a go-to spot for experienced snorkelers and divers seeking a wilder, less sheltered experience away from the piers and beaches of the bay.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Boat traffic

Cathedral Reef lies near the edge of shipping lanes in Port Phillip Bay; boat traffic can be significant.

  • Low risk: Strong currents

Tidal flows through Port Phillip Bay can create strong currents over the reef, requiring reasonable fitness and awareness.

  • Low risk: Cool water temperatures

The temperate waters of Port Phillip Bay can drop below 12°C in winter; adequate thermal protection (wetsuit/drysuit) is essential.

  • Low risk: Limited visibility

Visibility can vary significantly depending on weather and tidal conditions, occasionally dropping below 5 metres.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic (summer peak)

Peak charter and private boat activity from spring through autumn increases surface traffic.

  • Low risk: Kelp entanglement

Thick kelp forests can entangle fins and gear; snorkelers should carry a dive knife and remain calm if caught.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperature

Temperate waters year-round (12-19°C); a thick wetsuit (5-7mm) is essential for comfort and safety.
