The Blue Pool is a stunning natural ocean rock pool carved into the base of a dramatic cliff on the NSW Sapphire Coast. Measuring 52m long and 20m wide, this vivid opaline-green pool is fed by surging seawater at high tide, creating a tranquil snorkelling haven separated from the open ocean by a rugged bedrock wall. A shallow kids' wading pool sits at the southern end. The far, deep channel near the cliff wall is the best spot to snorkel, where larger fish gather among the rocky crevices. It has been rated among the top ocean rock pools in the world and offers a unique blend of sheltered swimming and wild coastal beauty.

Moderate risk: Heavy seas / large swell
During rough weather, powerful waves can wash over the pool walls. The pool wall was damaged in heavy seas in 2016 and later repaired. Avoid swimming during big swell.
Moderate risk: No lifeguards on duty
The Blue Pool is unpatrolled — no lifeguards are present. Swim at your own risk.
Moderate risk: Surging waves at high tide
At high tide, waves surge over the pool wall, creating strong turbulent conditions for inexperienced swimmers.
Moderate risk: No lifeguard on duty
There are no lifeguards stationed at this pool; swimmers swim at their own risk.
Moderate risk: Heavy Seas / Swell Overtopping
During high tides and rough seas, waves can wash over the pool walls making conditions dangerous. In 2016 part of the pool wall washed away in heavy seas.
Low risk: Summer algal blooms
In warmer summers, mats of algae can develop quickly, making the pool temporarily unsuitable for swimming until flushed by big seas or removed by council.
Low risk: Strong wind chop
When the wind picks up, constant spray off wavelets can make swimming uncomfortable and reduce visibility without goggles.
Low risk: Slippery rocks
The pool edges and surrounding rocky platforms can be very slippery, especially when wet.
Low risk: Slippery rock surfaces
The steps and rocks surrounding the pool can be very slippery, especially when wet.
Low risk: Crowded during peak season
Summer school holidays and hot days draw large crowds, making the pool very busy by mid-morning.
Low risk: No wheelchair or pram access
Access requires descending a steep staircase; not suitable for wheelchairs or prams.
Low risk: Steep stair access
Access requires descending two flights of steep stairs from the carpark, which can be challenging in wet conditions.
Low risk: Wind Hazard
Strong winds can blow a gale at the cliffside location, causing constant spray off wavelets and making swimming uncomfortable without goggles.
Low risk: Algal Blooms
In warmer summers, mats of algae can develop quickly, temporarily closing the pool until council removes it or big seas flush it out.
Low risk: No Lifeguards
No lifeguards or supervision on duty — swim at your own risk.
