The Basin is the quintessential Rottnest Island swimming and snorkeling spot — a sheltered, turquoise natural bay on the island's north side. Its calm, protected waters make it perfect for beginners and families, while the rocky reef edges just offshore reveal a lively underwater world teeming with colorful fish. When the afternoon "Freo Doctor" sea breeze kicks up elsewhere, The Basin stays glassy and inviting. The shallow sandy entry leads to seagrass beds and limestone reef patches where you can spot schools of baitfish, western king wrasse, and the occasional octopus. It's one of Western Australia's most iconic easy-access snorkel destinations.

Getting in
The Basin is on the northern side of Rottnest Island, about a 10-minute walk from the Thomson Bay ferry jetty (Rottnest Island Settlement). Head northwest past the shops and the main settlement, following the coastal path. Bicycles (rented on the island) are the preferred mode of transport. Regular ferries operate from Fremantle (Perth) and Hillarys Boat Harbour to Rottnest Island.
No private vehicle access on Rottnest Island. Bicycle racks are available near the beach. Ferry passengers walk or cycle from the jetty.
Rottnest Island entry fee applies (approx. AUD $15-20 per adult, varies by season). Ferry fares are separate, typically AUD $50-80 return from Fremantle.
