The spot

Community-maintained

Community contribution: submitted by Daniel

The Basin at Bargara is a natural tidal rock pool enclosed by ancient volcanic basalt boulders on the Southern Great Barrier Reef coast. At low tide, the rock walls create a calm, protected swimming area with crystal-clear water — perfect for beginners and families. Peer beneath the surface and you'll be greeted by colourful tropical fishes darting inches from your mask, all within the Woongarra Marine Park. This spot offers the easiest introduction to snorkelling in the Wide Bay region, combining safety with surprisingly rich marine encounters just steps from shore.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Stinger season (marine stingers)

Marine stingers (including box jellyfish) may be present in coastal waters during warmer months. Wear a stinger suit or check local warnings.

  • Low risk: Low tide shallowness

At low tide the basin becomes very shallow, which can limit swimming area and expose submerged boulders.

  • Low risk: Slippery volcanic rocks

The basalt boulders surrounding the basin can be slippery underfoot when wet.

  • Low risk: Low tide exposure

At very low tides the pool can become shallow, reducing the swimming area and exposing volcanic rocks.

  • Low risk: Variable water clarity

Visibility can drop on busy days when swimmers stir up sand; best visited early or at low tide.

  • Low risk: Cool water temperatures in winter

Late autumn through early spring (June–September) water temperatures drop, which may be uncomfortable without a wetsuit.

  • Low risk: Tide-dependent depth

The Basin is a tidal rock pool; at low tide water levels drop significantly, reducing swimming and snorkelling space. Best visited on an incoming to mid-tide.

  • Low risk: Cold winter water

Water temperatures can be cool coming out of winter (June–August), which may be uncomfortable for prolonged snorkeling.
