The Arches Marine Sanctuary lies 700 metres offshore from Port Campbell on Victoria's Shipwreck Coast, a 48-hectare underwater wonderland of towering dune limestone arches, canyons, caverns, ledges and vertical sinkholes in 19–25 metres of water. High-energy Southern Ocean swells have sculpted this dramatic seascape, where the upper reef is cloaked in golden kelp (Ecklonia radiata) while the shadowy undersides of the arches burst with vibrant gorgonian sea-fans, lace corals, sponges, hydroids, and bryozoans — animals typical of deeper Bass Strait waters. This premier dive and advanced snorkel site is home to Port Jackson Sharks sleeping under ledges, schools of Bluethroat Wrasse, Barber Perch, Dusky Morwong, and visiting Australian Fur Seals.

High risk: Depth & Decompression Risk
Snorkel and dive sites range from 19–25 metres; deep freediving or unplanned descents carry serious decompression and blackout risks.
Moderate risk: Strong Ocean Swells
The site is exposed to prevailing south-west winds and swells from the Southern Ocean, creating high-energy wave conditions year-round.
Moderate risk: Strong Currents
Powerful tidal and ocean currents can sweep through the reef channels and arches, especially during changing tides.
Moderate risk: Remote Offshore Access
The sanctuary is 700 m offshore with no direct shore entry; access is by boat or licensed tour only, and weather conditions can change rapidly.
Low risk: Cold Water Temperatures
Southern Ocean waters are cold year-round (typically 12–17°C), increasing the risk of hypothermia without proper exposure protection.
