At Fish Rock, just off South West Rocks on the Mid North Coast, The Aquarium is a shallow gully at the exit of Fish Rock Cave — Australia's only underwater sea cave running through an entire island. After swimming through the cave's bubble chamber, you emerge into this sunlit, fish-filled amphitheatre where enormous schools of big eyes and stripeys swirl above rocky ledges. Grey nurse sharks patrol the entrance, while wobbegongs and stingrays rest on the sandy floor. The unique cave-and-gully topography, framed by bommies and sponge-covered walls, makes this an unforgettable snorkel and dive site teeming with pelagic life and temperate reef wonders.

Moderate risk: Tidal currents
Strong tidal currents can sweep through Fish Rock Cave and The Aquarium gully, especially during changing tides. Snorkelers should be confident in current-prone waters.
Moderate risk: Cave swim-through
Swimming through the narrow Fish Rock Cave tunnel (24m depth descending to 12m) requires good buoyancy control. Snorkelers should only enter on calm days with a guide.
Low risk: Grey nurse sharks
Grey nurse sharks frequent the entrance of The Aquarium. While generally docile, they are large sharks that should be treated with respect and given ample space.
Low risk: Exposed offshore conditions
The site requires a boat trip; weather-dependent access and potential for rough sea conditions in exposed waters around the island.
