Nestled at the southern end of Terrigal Beach beside the iconic Skillion headland, The Haven is a protected boat harbour that doubles as a superb shore-entry snorkel spot on the Central Coast. Inside the breakwall the water is calmer than the main beach, making it ideal for exploring seagrass beds, sandy flats, and boulder reefs teeming with fish. The shallow reef straight off the boat ramp is cloaked in kelp, while the deeper ocean-facing side reveals gorgonian fans and sponge gardens. It's a macro heaven: look closely in the seagrass for seahorses, pipefish, and anglerfish, and watch luderick, leatherjackets, and juvenile fish swarming the shallows. With waterfront cafes, a grassy reserve, and a large free car park, it's one of the most accessible and rewarding snorkel sites on the NSW Central Coast.

High risk: Blue-lined octopus
The highly venomous blue-lined octopus (Hapalochlaena fasciata) has been recorded in the seagrass beds. Do not touch any small octopus.
Moderate risk: Boat traffic at ramp
The boat ramp is busy with launching and retrieving vessels. Avoid entering directly in front of the ramp and stay vigilant.
Moderate risk: Reef surge in swell
When swells break across the outer reef, strong surge makes snorkeling unpleasant and unsafe. If surfers are on the reef break, skip the dive.
Moderate risk: Swell surge on outer reef
When swells break across the outer reef, strong surge makes snorkeling unpleasant and hazardous. A good rule: if surfers are on the reef break, skip the dive.
Moderate risk: Swell and surge on outer reef
When swells break across the outer reef, strong surge makes snorkeling unpleasant and potentially dangerous. If surfers are on the reef break, avoid entering.
Low risk: Reduced visibility after rain
When Terrigal Lagoon is opened to the sea after heavy rain, runoff reduces water clarity significantly.
Low risk: Mooring lines and boats
Mooring lines from anchored boats can be entanglement hazards. Snorkel around moored vessels with care.
Low risk: Boat traffic at boat ramp
The boat ramp is active with vessel launching and retrieval. Stay clear of the ramp channel.
Low risk: Moored boat congestion
The area underneath moored boats can be crowded; watch for swinging mooring lines.
Low risk: Surge on outer reef
When swells break across the outer reef, strong surge can make snorkeling unpleasant and potentially dangerous. General rule: if surfers are on the reef break, give it a miss.
Low risk: Lagoon outflow after rain
After periods of heavy rain, Terrigal Lagoon is opened to the sea, carrying runoff and reducing water visibility and quality. Avoid snorkeling during these times.
Low risk: Mooring lines and boat traffic
The Haven has many moored boats with lines that can entangle snorkelers. Watch out for vessels moving within the harbour.
Low risk: Terrigal Lagoon outflow after rain
After heavy rain the council opens Terrigal Lagoon to the sea, reducing visibility and water quality. Avoid snorkeling for a few days following significant rainfall.
Low risk: Moored boat mooring lines
Several boats moor in the haven; submerged mooring lines and anchors present entanglement hazards, especially in the seagrass and sand-flat areas.
Low risk: Swell across outer reef
When swells break across the outer reef, strong surge makes snorkeling uncomfortable and disorienting. Check conditions before entering.
Low risk: Terrigal Lagoon discharge after rain
After heavy rain, the council opens Terrigal Lagoon to the sea, flushing sediment and freshwater into the Haven, drastically reducing visibility.
Low risk: Boat traffic near ramp
The Haven has an active boat ramp — snorkelers should stay well clear of the launch lane and be aware of vessels coming and going.
Low risk: Mooring lines and submerged anchors
Several boat moorings dot the bay with anchor chains, ropes, and a known submerged anchor that can entangle swimmers.
