Tathra Wharf is a historic 1860s timber wharf on the NSW Sapphire Coast that doubles as an exceptional shore-entry snorkel site. Beneath the surface, the rocky reef is blanketed with thousands of colourful gorgonian sea fans, sponges, soft corals, and sea squirts — a spectacle rarely seen this far south. Schools of yellowtail, friendly blue gropers, leatherjackets, blackfish, and wrasse cruise the reef edge at depths of 3–15 m. The wharf pilings themselves host additional marine life, and you may spot stingrays in the sheltered shallows. The site offers one of the best temperate-water snorkelling experiences in NSW, with clear visibility and calm conditions on favourable days.
