The Tanker Jetty (now the Esperance Jetty) stretches 415 metres into the crystal-clear waters of Esperance Bay. Originally built in 1934 as a working tanker berth, the jetty was rebuilt and reopened in 2021 as a premier recreational landmark. Beneath its deck, an underwater trail of artificial reefs leads snorkellers and divers past the original jetty pylons, which are encrusted with colourful sponges and soft corals. The sheltered bay offers calm, shallow conditions ideal for observing large schools of old wives, minnows, and a variety of temperate reef fish against a backdrop of white sand and turquoise water.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong currents on outgoing tide

Currents can pick up around the jetty head during outgoing tides, particularly in winter months.

  • Low risk: Fishing activity

Anglers frequently fish from the jetty; snorkellers should stay within designated swimming/snorkelling zones to avoid stray hooks and lines.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

Boat traffic can be present near the jetty. Stay close to the structure and use a dive flag when possible.

  • Low risk: Afternoon wind chop

Winds can pick up in the afternoon, creating surface chop that reduces visibility and makes entry/exit more challenging.

  • Low risk: Fishing lines and hooks

The jetty is a popular fishing spot. Snorkellers should be aware of active fishing lines from above and stray hooks in the water.

  • Low risk: Boat traffic near jetty head

The outer end of the jetty may see small boat traffic. Stay close to the jetty structure and be visible.
