Swan Wreck (No Take Zone) is a protected artificial reef and marine sanctuary off the Southwest Capes coast, lying roughly between Bunbury and Busselton in Geographe Bay. Designated as a no-take sanctuary zone, the waters around the wreck are completely protected from fishing and collecting, allowing marine life to thrive in extraordinary abundance. The wreck structure — a purposely scuttled vessel — is now encrusted with colourful sponges, soft corals, and kelp, attracting schools of Western Australian dhufish, kingfish, bullseyes, and sweep. Snorkelers drift over the superstructure in clear, temperate waters, peering into holds and around the bow where baitfish shimmer in dense clouds. The site is best visited on calm, high-visibility days from late spring through early autumn, when water temperatures are mildest.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • Moderate risk: Strong currents

Tidal flow around the wreck can create moderate currents, especially during tide changes. Snorkelers should be competent in open water.

  • Moderate risk: Boat traffic

The wreck site may be accessed by boat, and surface visibility from vessels is a concern. Snorkelers should use a dive flag and stay aware of boats in the area.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperature

Temperate waters can be cold (16–20°C / 60–68°F), even in summer. A wetsuit (3–5 mm) is strongly recommended to prevent hypothermia.

  • Low risk: Reduced visibility

After wind events or winter swells, visibility can drop significantly. Best conditions occur on calm, settled days from November to April.
