The Surry River Mouth, located near the sleepy coastal hamlet of Narrawong in Western Victoria, is a seasonally closed salt-wedge estuary where freshwater meets the Southern Ocean. This shallow, sheltered spot (mostly under 1.3 m depth, max 4.2 m) offers a unique snorkeling environment among seagrass beds and sandy channels. The calm, murky estuarine waters are better suited to exploring the river channel than open ocean — expect to see small fish, crabs, and birdlife in a tranquil, off-the-beaten-track setting rather than a classic reef snorkel.

Low risk: Seasonal estuary closure
The river mouth can close off to the sea by a sandbar in dry periods, limiting access and altering water flow and clarity.
Low risk: Shallow variable depths
Much of the estuary is less than 1.3 m deep, with sudden deeper patches up to 4.2 m — watch for unexpected drops.
Low risk: Turbid water after rain
Heavy rain can stir up sediment, reducing visibility significantly in this shallow estuarine environment.
