Suck Rock is a rocky reef break off the Mid North Coast of NSW, near Port Macquarie, known primarily as a surf spot but also offering snorkelling over its shallow reef formations. The exposed reef shelf creates interesting underwater terrain with channels, gutters, and rock ledges that shelter a variety of temperate marine life. Best accessed on calm, low-swell days when the water clears, this is a wild, uncrowded spot for experienced snorkelers looking to explore a natural reef environment away from the busy beaches.

Know before you go

Logged by the community, confirmed by mods

  • High risk: Ocean swell and dumping waves

Suck Rock is an exposed reef break with consistent, often powerful surf. Snorkeling should only be attempted in calm, low-swell conditions (under 1 m).

  • High risk: Shallow reef and rocks

Sharp reef shelves and submerged boulders are present just below the surface, posing a serious injury risk if caught in a wave break.

  • Moderate risk: Strong rips and currents

Tidal movement around the reef shelf produces strong rip currents. Only suitable for experienced swimmers in calm conditions.

  • Low risk: Limited visibility in swell

Sand and sediment stirred up by wave action can reduce visibility to near zero. Choose a day with low swell and offshore winds.
