Hamelin Pool in Shark Bay World Heritage Area is home to the world's most diverse and abundant stromatolites — 'living fossils' that represent life on Earth from 3.5 billion years ago. This shallow, hyper-saline marine basin allows you to snorkel alongside ancient microbial mats that built the earliest reefs. Access is by guided private tour (Shark Bay Eco Tours) that 4WDs to a restricted site. The crystal-clear, calm water over the carbonate platform offers a surreal window into primordial Earth. Viewing from the boardwalk (currently damaged by Cyclone Seroja) is also possible from shore with binoculars at low tide.

High risk: Microbial mat sensitivity
The living stromatolite mats are extremely fragile — walking on them causes irreversible damage. Snorkellers must not touch, stand on, or disturb the formations.
Moderate risk: Tidal exposure and timing
Stromatolites are best viewed/snorkelled at very low tide; incoming tide changes water depth rapidly.
Moderate risk: Restricted access
Snorkelling at the stromatolite sites is only permitted via authorised guided tours (Shark Bay Eco Tours) due to conservation restrictions.
Low risk: Remote location
Hamelin Pool is in a very remote area of Western Australia with limited mobile reception, no nearby medical facilities, and extreme summer heat.
Low risk: Cyclone season
The 200 m viewing boardwalk was damaged by Cyclone Seroja (2021) and remains closed. Cyclones can impact access from November to April.
