Stragglers Reef lies off the sheltered northeastern side of Carnac Island, a limestone outcrop 10 km west of Fremantle, Western Australia. This fringing reef system features shallow granite and limestone bommies draped in kelp and sponges, with crystal-clear turquoise waters that offer superb visibility. The reef is a prime snorkel destination for encountering the island's resident colony of Australian sea lions, which curl and somersault around swimmers. Beyond the playful pinnipeds, the reef teems with schools of blue groper, western king wrasse, and the occasional wobbegong shark resting beneath ledges. Reached exclusively by boat tour or private vessel from Fremantle, the site delivers a world-class wildlife snorkelling experience within 30 minutes of Perth's CBD.

  • High risk: Tiger snake population

Carnac Island hosts one of Australia's densest populations of tiger snakes...

  • High risk: Tiger snakes on island

Carnac Island is famously populated by a large population of tiger snakes. Do not go ashore or walk on the island without proper guidance.

  • Moderate risk: Protective sea lions

Sea lions are wild and can become aggressive...

  • Moderate risk: Tiger snakes on Carnac Island

The island hosts a large population of highly venomous tiger snakes; snorkelers should avoid straying inland from the beach.

  • Moderate risk: Strong currents and rips

The waters around Carnac Island can experience strong tidal currents and rips, particularly on the western side and during tidal changes. A man was rescued in 2024 after getting into difficulty offshore.

  • Low risk: Swell exposure

Southwest swells can affect the exposed western side...

  • Low risk: Boat traffic & restricted access

Private boaters must observe speed limits...

  • Low risk: Boat traffic

The island is only accessible by boat, requiring awareness of vessel traffic around the island and mooring areas.

  • Low risk: Cold water temperatures

Perth's ocean water can be cool, especially outside summer months. Wetsuits are highly recommended.

  • Low risk: Strong afternoon sea breezes (Nov–Mar)

The Fremantle Doctor (southwesterly wind) picks up in summer afternoons, creating chop and making return boat trips rougher.

  • Low risk: Ocean swell exposure

Southerly swells can wrap around the island, causing surge over the reef and reducing water clarity, particularly in winter.

  • Low risk: Tiger snakes

Carnac Island is known for a high population of tiger snakes. While they stay on land and are not a direct snorkelling hazard, visitors should be cautious when walking on the island.

  • Low risk: Swell and wind exposure

South-westerly winds and swell can make conditions challenging, particularly on the exposed western side. The eastern bay offers shelter in typical conditions.

  • Low risk: Marine wildlife interactions

Australian Sea Lions are wild animals. Healthy distances must be maintained, and touching or approaching them is prohibited. The crew advises on safe distances on tour.
