Stingray Bay, nestled on the Mornington Peninsula within Port Phillip Bay, is a tranquil shore-entry snorkel site known for its calm, protected waters and sandy seafloor interspersed with rocky reef patches. The site sits near the historic Mornington Pier breakwater, offering easy access for snorkelers of all levels. Its clear, shallow waters — typically 1–8 m deep — make it a favoured spot for spotting smooth stingrays gliding across the sandy bottom, along with colourful reef fish and, in season, weedy sea dragons among the sponge-covered rocks.

Moderate risk: Incoming Tide Surge
The tide coming in creates a rough surge and strong currents that can be dangerous for swimmers and snorkellers.
Low risk: Stingray encounters
Smooth stingrays commonly inhabit the sandy shallows. Shuffle your feet to avoid startling them and never corner or touch them.
Low risk: Boat traffic near pier
The adjacent Mornington Pier and breakwater area sees boat traffic. Stay aware of your surroundings and avoid the main boating channel.
Low risk: Cold water temperatures
Port Phillip Bay waters are cool year-round. Wetsuit (5 mm+) recommended even in summer.
Low risk: Steep Staircase Access
Access involves descending a steep wooden staircase from the car park to the beach, which can be slippery when wet.
Low risk: Rough Conditions
Conditions can become quite rough, requiring intermediate to advanced swimming and snorkelling experience.
